On May 15, 2026, during the large-scale “Science Picnic” at Sumy State University dedicated to Science Day, the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law demonstrated the integration of cutting-edge technologies into modern legal science. In addition to hosting interactive hubs, the Institute was strongly represented in the event’s lecture hall, addressing one of today’s most pressing topics: the legal regulation of Artificial Intelligence.

An expert presentation titled “Artificial Intelligence and Whose Rights Are They? How Copyright for Smart Software is Protected in Ukraine and the EU” was delivered by Yevheniia Lytvynenko, Assistant Professor at the Department of Criminal Law Disciplines and Procedure and Head of the Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) at the SSU Institute of Law.

The presentation sparked keen interest among high schoolers, university students, and fellow scholars. The speaker broke down complex legal nuances resulting from the rapid rise of generative AI into an accessible and engaging format. The presentation provided a detailed analysis of:

  • Ownership of AI-generated assets: Who holds the rights to texts, images, and code created via neural networks;

  • Adaptation of Ukrainian legislation: How current laws are evolving to meet digital realities;

  • European Union standards: A look at strict EU regulations, including the EU AI Act, in the sphere of intellectual property protection and smart software management.

As the Head of the Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) at the Institute of Law, Yevheniia Lytvynenko also introduced the youth to the legal mechanisms available at the Institute for protecting their own IT developments, startups, and inventive projects.

This presentation serves as a prime example of how the faculty at the Department of Criminal Law Disciplines and Procedure actively shape the legal framework for Ukraine’s secure digital future and its integration into the European legal space.

The SSU Institute of Law has proven once again: legal education today is innovative, forward-thinking, and incredibly exciting!
