On 23 December 2025, the Department of Criminal Law and Procedure of the academic and research institute of law organised and held the scientific and practical workshop “GDPR in Your Pocket: European Practices of Data Protection on Smartphones” within the framework of the ERASMUS-JMO-2023-MODULE – ERASMUS2027 – 101125350 – “EUEPPDC” project (Jean Monnet Module of the Erasmus+ Programme).
The event had a strong educational and practice-oriented focus and was aimed at enhancing the level of digital literacy and legal awareness of students, school pupils, and academic staff in the field of personal data protection and the secure use of mobile devices.
During the workshop, participants addressed key issues related to the protection of personal data on smartphones in compliance with GDPR requirements, cybersecurity challenges in the context of wartime conditions, modern vectors of personal and sensitive data leakage, as well as practical differences in security approaches between iOS- and Android-based smartphones.
The workshop featured presentations by Olha Maletova, Head of the Department of Criminal Law and Procedure and Project Implementer of EUEPPDC, Doctor of Law; a representative of a law enforcement agency; Oleksandr Kushnarov, Head of the Scientific Society of Students, Postgraduate Students, Doctoral Candidates, and Young Researchers of Sumy State University, PhD in Economics (Specialty 051 “Economics”); and Mykhailo Dumchykov, Project Coordinator of EUEPPDC, Doctor of Law.
Throughout the event, participants received practical recommendations on smartphone security settings, became familiar with typical risks associated with mobile applications, and engaged in discussions on the practical implementation of EU data protection standards in Ukraine.
The workshop confirmed a high level of interest among young people in digital security issues and marked another important step in the implementation of educational and awareness-raising initiatives of the Department of Criminal Law and Procedure within the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet project.
