On September 3, 2025, the Oxford Podcasts platform released the second episode of the Oxford Ukraine Hub Podcast, entitled “Challenges to State Consolidation.” The discussion was devoted to the key challenges and prospects of consolidating the Ukrainian state in the context of post-war recovery.
Among the invited speakers was Dr. Maryna Utkina, Doctor of Law, Associate Professor at the Department of Criminal Law and Procedure of the Educational and Research Institute of Law at Sumy State University, who is also affiliated with the University of Warwick. The panel also included distinguished scholars such as Dr. Nataliya Kibita (a researcher of Ukraine’s institutional design in the twentieth century) and Dr. Zbig Wojnowski (Associate Professor of Soviet History at the University of Oxford).
In her contribution, Dr. Utkina focused on pressing issues of strengthening statehood and ensuring Ukraine’s institutional resilience. She emphasized that the post-war reconstruction process requires not only economic and political solutions but also systemic improvements in legal regulation and anti-corruption measures, which should serve as the foundation for sustainable state consolidation.
