Mykhailo Dumchykov, Associate Professor at the Department of Criminal Law Disciplines and Judiciary of Sumy State University, delivered an educational open lecture-discussion on “iOS vs Android: Real Differences in Smartphone Security”.
The event was organised as part of the ERASMUS-JMO-2023-MODULE – ERASMUS2027 – 101125350 – “EUEPPDC” project (Jean Monnet Module of the Erasmus+ Programme).
The lecture attracted a diverse audience, including students from Sumy State University, school pupils from Sumy, and lecturers from various higher education institutions. During the event, participants had the opportunity to learn about key aspects of mobile device cybersecurity, compare the security levels of iOS and Android operating systems, and discuss current threats and methods of protecting personal data.
Mykhailo Dumchykov emphasised the growing problem of cybercrime related to smartphone use. In particular, current threats such as phishing attacks, malicious software, personal data leaks due to operating system vulnerabilities, and risks associated with third-party applications were examined. The lecturer also highlighted differences in the security architecture of iOS and Android, explaining why Apple’s closed ecosystem provides a higher level of control, whereas Android’s openness offers greater customisation possibilities but simultaneously creates additional risks.
Special attention was given to practical recommendations for protecting personal information: using two-factor authentication, regularly updating software, exercising caution when installing applications, and consciously managing app permissions.
The event contributed to enhancing digital literacy and raising awareness among young people about the safe use of modern technologies, while also stimulating active discussion about the role of personal user responsibility in ensuring cybersecurity.
