According to the Order № 334-1 of 15.09.2005, the Department of Law was established at Sumy State University by reorganizing the section of jurisprudence, which existed from 01.09.1997. at the Department of Political Science, Sociology and Law.

- Grinchenko VV (01/09/1998 – 07/02/2000);
- Sinchenko Yu.P. (07/02/2000 – 14/09/2005).
- Kulish AM (since 15.09.2005).
On September 15, 2005, in accordance with Order № 334-1, the Department of Law was established by reorganizing the section of jurisprudence, headed by Anatoliy Mykolayovych Kulish.
On August 23 , 2010, the Department of Administrative, Commercial Law and Procedure was established by separating it from the Department of Law (AGPP).
On September 20, 2010, the Faculty of Law of SSU was established, by removing from the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Law was headed by MM Burbyka.
On the basis of the Department of Law in 2014, the Academic Council of the University approved a new structure of the Faculty of Law consisting of departments: Administrative, Economic Law and Financial and Economic Security – Graduation (Head of the Department – Doctor of Law, Associate Professor Mykhailo Mykhailovych Burbyka), Judiciary and International Law ( Head of the Department – Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Volodymyr V. Pakhomov), Theory and History of State and Law (Head of the Department – Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Valery Mykolayovych Vlasenko);
The establishment of the department was due to the need to train highly qualified personnel in the field of justice and international law, which was facilitated by the human and infrastructural potential of Sumy State University.
In 2016, on the basis of the law faculties of Sumy State University and the Ukrainian Academy of Banking, the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law of Sumy State University was established by merging two powerful faculties. The Department of Criminal Law and Procedure was established.
The department is a part of the Institute of Law of SSU, and trains specialists in the specialty 081 “Law” OS “Bachelor” and “Master” (OP “Intellectual Property”).
The purpose of the department is to meet the growing demand of Ukrainian society for the training of highly qualified specialists in modern justice and international law, financial and economic security of economic entities, intellectual property, with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to apply them effectively in everyday work.
The department is headed by PAKHOMOV VOLODYMYR VASYLOVYCH, Doctor of Law, Associate Professor.
The main task of the department is to train qualified professionals who have leadership and high moral qualities, are competitive in the labor market, effectively interact in the professional, corporate and social environment, those who have social mobility and have a steady demand from employers.
To implement the task: openly and organizationally and methodically provided the functioning of the specialty “Law”. The teaching staff of the department includes doctors and candidates of law and political science, graduates of leading universities of Ukraine and the best graduates of SumDU; established and established contacts with employers for employment of graduates of the department; the program of passing of industrial practice on directions in management of justice, penitentiary service, public authorities, executive service, judicial administration, law enforcement agencies, the enterprises and establishments is introduced; students have the opportunity to obtain the rank of reserve officer at the military department of SumDU.
